If you want to know how to (attempt to) manipulate someone, listen to the master, SD64.
DH89's birthday was yesterday. With his 2 forms of cancer and the oncoming dementia, our 5 kids and the 2 inlaws all seemed to make an extra effort in case it's the last. I let SD64 come Monday when her daughter cleaned but she forgot his gift, no big deal, he doesn't care about gifts very much. We were at his doctor yesterday then both napped so I didn't see her message til late. "I tried to call Dad. Please tell him to call me, I miss him so much".
So, this morning, I suggested he call her. He kept putting it off til I said call her, I don't want her to think I'm keeping you from calling her. So, he did. I didn't hear it all but some phrases were "I don't have place to live". "I don't know where I'll live", " I'm afraid", "I don't have any money" and more along that line. I'm guessing it's hitting the fan living with her daughter and grandson in the small Section 8 apartment. Also, whines about her car's issues.
I was holding my breath thinking DH89 might cave as he's done so many times. Instead, I heard " You'll figure out something", "I've always found a place to live" and when she said she was afraid, he laughed and said "you, afraid?". Either his dementia has entered a new phase or he had a moment of his native common sense. At the end, he said, "I called about my birthday, not this".
On another note, yesterday, after he sees the oncologist, he goes to the infusion center for his shot. As the nurse prepped him, she noticed it was his birthday. After the shot, she said, wait a minute, I'll get you a cookie for your birthday. Instead,, after 5 minutes, all the nurses came in and sang him Happy Birthday. A good moment in a place with many sad and painful events. Thanks, you nurses.

I'm glad your DH didn't fall for any of SD64's sob stories.
Happy belated birthday to him! Hope that cookie was yummy. ![]()

Well, Manipulation Master or not, this time SD64's nonsense did not succeed - good on your DH for holding fast against her attempts to turn him into her caretaker.

Yes, she's looking for somebody to step up. Sadly, everyone has already been burnt out.

Your story reminded me of DH's father's late stage dementia. His SO (my dh's step-mom) was pretty selfish and could be mean. For example, she would brag that she never once got her own gas for her car because she made her DH get it for her. She also never did the shopping, and she didn't "allow" him to have cats, etc. She very much controlled almost every aspect of their lives. In any case, when DH's father was deep into dementia, he started getting angry with her and even threatened her at some point. She felt force to move him into assisted living where they evaluated him. One thing they looked at was whether there was spousal abuse. Apparently, sudden anger in a dementia patient is a sign of that. They did not find abuse, but the two lived separately after that. I got the sense that when dh's father began to lose his cognitive faculties, there was an inner intuition or sense that kicked in that finally broke through all of the excuses we have for accepting treatment that is less than what we deserve.

Thanks for sharing that, Trying. I'm learning more and more about dementia. His response sounded like the sensible person I knew who was always clear sighted about life. The exception used to be SD who he tried to protect from reality. This new attitude might be part of what YSS59 has observed..YSS said DH used to grill him about every aspect of his life, now doesn't. I read somewhere that the dementia folks only have so much interest or ability to focus. So, maybe he took in as much as he was capable then stopped her.
In any event, I hate that she can't grasp his situation, continues to pile on her problems no matter what. He has 2 forms of cancer along with the dementia and infirmity. I could see him on a deathbed somewhere with her showing up and starting in on her car problems, housing situation, medical issues, financial difficulties and latest relationship failures. Sigh...

George Bernard Shaw once said that to the person with a toothache, nothing in the world matters but his tooth pain. Your OSD's whole world seems to revolve around her narrow self-involved grievances. What a sad, tiny island to live on.
