Another (successful) round in the ring with SD29

The "boss lady" step-diabla29 stayed with us for 2 (long) weeks. This is a full-grown woman. The very same SD that threw her routine crying tantrum on the lawn last week.
She has a job that pays her enough to be financially independent, thank-god, yet she still has a transient lifestyle and no home of her own. Of course she can always go stay with BM.

To answer Merry's question, DH tried to calm her down for a few minutes and then ignored the tantrum. Her behavior did seem to throw him off and dampen his high hopes for changed Sdiabla behavior. This was a big improvement on Dh's part, in the past he would have spent hours going round and round with her trying to help her understand. I was super happy that he got to be her target instead of me. That is the beauty of what happens when we as SM's disengage and remove our attention, the SDiablas start taking aim at their own. We are no longer available to be their target.
Her "go to" is that she is a victim and she is confused as to why anyone would be frustrated or angry with her. Catering to her insanity only encourages it.

Over the years things have evolved. SD's haven't been around enough to understand how our household operates. Of course they think they know everything and so they operate on assumptions that in no way reflect reality.

For a little history:

When SD's were preteens/teens I would make healthy, tasty breakfast and dinners for our family. We insisted that ALL the children sit together at the table for dinner.

"We just want our Daaaaaaaaaaad." We did allow SD's to have lots and lots of solo time with DH but we did not allow SD's to dictate our lives. We often did events, family trips and vacations together whither they liked it or not. Of course they did everything possible to make these times a miserable experience for everyone.

Then SD's (mercifully) went off to college. They would return for holidays, I continued to make meals for our family. SD's would frequently criticize, turn up their noses, and complain that they didn't like something or my cooking didn't fit within their ever changing dietary preferences. They did admit privately to DH that I am a very good cook. (former chef actually)

What they fail to realize is that the reason I continued to make dinner for everyone is that, at that time, my children were still children. My children are younger than the diablas and so I continued to cook family meals. Now that my children are grown, I no longer make "family" style dinners.

I taught my BK's to prepare their own meals. They have flown the nest. Now that they are adults they have not only met but in some ways they have surpassed my own kitchen skills. For example, my DD makes a mean pastry.

The next phase: Once SD's went off to college I quietly dropped the rope. I did not attend their college graduations or anything else.

DH retired and we have tons of time together without SD's around. We no longer ask SD's to share their time with DH with me or anyone else.

I happily waved goodbye as they demand outings with ONLY DH. DH took on the full burden of keeping his grown-demanding diablas happy. The diablas are slow learners and I think it took them about 5-10 years to realize that the old game of exclusion no longer causes any drama. They get 100% of DH's time without me joining them. It has also been eye-opening for DH. Dealing with the diablas makes him quite weary. They can no longer point the finger at me as to why they act the way they do.

As a side note, SD's were also super weird during the covid years acting as if DH and I were infectious pariah's even though we got vaccinated and did all the things. They held up BM as the better parent which was fine by me. I was happy they didn't come around as often.

Fast forward, they decided to come test the waters, one after the other. I laid down a relevant and reasonable boundary with each of them. OSD is not to touch my things without permission and YSD is not to boss me around in my house. This kept them away for about a year.

YSD came back again first. She didn't like the boundaries so she has left for a temp work/housing situation.

OSD was here for 2 weeks. She finally stayed around and observed enough that I think she is beginning to see how we live our lives. (However we want) Not that she didn't try to boss DH around, she did. DH gets really annoyed by it. I just sit back and watch the circus. She also likes to tell DH what he should buy, how he should decorate our house and so on. I think she was here to try to "catch" me being "mean" to her. (not serving her hand and foot) She acted as if me setting the boundary that she not touch my things was the end of the world. HUGE crying fit after that one. I think she was hoping to create another incident like that one but since she wisely didn't touch my things, there was no incident.

What she found instead is that DH and I go out a lot and live our own full lives. Most days I'm not even home by dinner so there is nothing to "catch" and I certainly don't cater anything to her. I am polite. I am not passive aggressive like she is but I kept my distance and lived my own life.

She pulled her old games of bringing gifts for ONLY DH, talking about these gifts incessantly in front of me, making sure that when I went out she offered to treat ONLY DH to a restaurant dinner, talking about people I don't know or memories from childhood that I was not there for. I ignored it all.

She stayed in our guest cottage that has it's own fully equipped kitchen but she would insist on coming into my kitchen, stomp around in a huffy, aggressive and off-putting manner to cook her own meals and then slam the door on her way out.

I stayed out of her way and was fortunate that her cooking never interfered with my use of my kitchen. She took her dirty dishes from the guest cottage and put them in the dishwasher in the main house which results in having all the guest house dishes mixed in with our dishes. I ignored it all but I did laugh as she ran out of dishes in the guest cottage because she had brought them all into the my kitchen and left them there. Natural consequences. By the end of her trip she had stopped coming into my kitchen to cook.

She likes to make up reasons why I am the problem. My personality isn't effervescent enough, I don't wait on and serve her hand and foot etc... but I know that the real problem for her is that I EXIST. As much as I dislike being around her, I still managed to make sure my presence was felt. She came into the door, I am there. I try to never be alone with her and I don't seek out spending time with her and DH but if DH and I are in our normal spots and she comes along, I stay firm and present in my space.

She left in an uppity, pissy mood. I am pretty sure she won't be back for awhile. I remained calm and carried on and never reacted to her behavior or attitude. I hope the experience was no fun for her and she will find her own place to live. Then DH can go visit her in her own space.

Well done you!  It sounds like you are managing your life perfectly.  I am not surprised she left in an "uppity" mood but that's on her, totally.  It's great that you are able not to let her affect you any more.

Re: Another (successful) round in the ring with SD29

Two things you wrote stood out for me.  The base reason for all the problems we stepmoms experience is, as you say, we EXIST.  That's it, period

Also, when you let DH experience the Diablas without you as buffer or target, how annoyed he gets.  Now that I don't interact with SD64, my DH88 gets to experience her himself.  I've let her come here 3 times this year, she comes with her daughter who cleans.  I either go in another room while they talk, or run an errand.  The last time, after they'd talked awhile, he said to me, "SD64 can xyz for you".  I said, I no, she's here to spend time with you, not to work.  He looked sad.  A little later, I said I was running to Walmart.  He asked if she was coming with me   He looked hopeful.  I said no, I'll be right back.  Nice try, DH.  Lol. .

Lucky him, he gets to hear the never-ending list of her car problems, health issues (too many body parts to remember), finances (lack of), grievances against anybody who doesn't coddle her, non-existent relationship with 2 of her kids, poor luck, heartless banks, insurance and phone companies, etc etc

Re: Another (successful) round in the ring with SD29

I’m so glad your DH didn’t make excuses for or feed into her childish tantrum. Progress!

Telling DH what to do is one of the basic problems I have with my SD. Well, no, the problem is with DH. He used to practically salivate trying to obey her command and meet every wish. It was nauseating.

When my needs and wishes differed from hers, I was supposed to suck it up, “be the bigger person,” let her have her way because the consequences weren’t worth the fight. I’ll admit I fell for it and tried to smile through it. But that felt so icky. DH and I had several arguments, major ones, and eventually he had to decide if he wanted a full-time wife or not.

He admits now that he’s glad to be free of her control, but does miss having her in his life. I get that, and I’m sorry for him, but neither of them do anything about it.

She sounds like a total LOSER!  And I 2nd the fact that you and DH didn't feed her narc supply was a WIN!

Re: Another (successful) round in the ring with SD29

I agree with others that your dh seems to be making progress. I've been wondering to what extent dh will "see" SS's behaviors for what they are with some distance and time. I get the feeling that some things never change. But I do have hope. I actually want to start another post about this.

I totally understand the part about how her sense of entitlement made her upset not to be catered to. Like in what world do you expect that? I think that one of the reasons SS and I got along in the beginning was because I did cater to his needs. Astonishingly, I think he expected that to continue even as he was lashing out at me and disrespecting me. I do think that it probably stems from a deficit, but it seems like I'm the only one ever expected to try and make up for that deficit.

You seem to be taking everything in stride and letting her brew in her own bitterness. I think it's a good approach to focus on your own life. I'm trying to be more like that.

Re: Another (successful) round in the ring with SD29

Tryingjusttrying, you wondered how clearly the DHs finally see their kids' poor behavior.   My DH88 sees SD64's toxic personality on some level, I know he's too sharp not to see it.  The other 4 kids have told him about many of her misdeeds over the years.  He doesn't defend her anymore but that's cuz we never discuss her.   So, I'd say after 50+ years yes, he sees it but I know in his heart he excuses her.  As long as I don't have to see her, talk to her or hear about her, I can live with that.

Re: Another (successful) round in the ring with SD29

I've read your SD saga over the years, and what you say tracks with my understanding of your dh. I totally understand that limbo, trance-like state your dh dwells in. He probably understands that "objectively" SD's behaviors are unacceptable, but there is an ineffable but somehow justified reason why she does the things that she does, so no one has the right to hold her responsible. That's how my dh thinks at least, but I hope that one day he breaks through to the other side and can call a spade a spade. In fact, I think that it would help SS to do that. Although I don't see him that much anymore, it seems to me that SS is out of touch with reality. I think his parents should do more to help SS connect the dots between his actions, consequences, and reflection about these things.

Re: Another (successful) round in the ring with SD29

You really hit the nail on the head.  That's good exactly how DH88 seems to think.  He used to say, "The nuthouse is full of them", now says nothing.  Or as I used to tell Mom when she shook her head over somebody's behavior, "Not everybody is as strong as you are".  He was saying she couldn't help it and I was saying she's weak.  We were both wrong, she's evil.

I enjoyed reading this and certainly smiled a number of times.

Re: Another (successful) round in the ring with SD29

Meera - this is a FANTASTIC update! I was grinning ear to ear !! I recently got to happily wave DH goodbye as he voyaged to the SKIDs - we're still in a process where we attempt to keep the household separate. They are adult SKIDs and so DH goes off to visit annually & for years I used to feel left out and then one day I thought about how LITTLE I get out of those experiences and how important my time on this earth is. Now I see this as a wonderful opportunity to let them get their "I ONLY WANT MY DADDDEEE" fix in and I don't have to lift a finger.
The fact that you had her in the cottage and remained strong, confident and unfazed is FANTASTIC.

Re: Another (successful) round in the ring with SD29

Go, Meera!!!! I am smiling too for you. Doesnt it feel so liberating and satisfying when you take a step back to let DH or anyone else in the family for that matter , just take the full brunt of their little darlings drama without us lowly stepmoms to be used a referee or a scapegoat anymore. Just let the chips fall where they may,
I have been applying the same strategy and pleased to see that is does work out in our favor as DH or whomever else who used to coddle SDs, start to get a reality check and see the light. It does happen even though you never expect it to.  There is something that is so freeing about that, even though we know that it doesn't mean we have complete freedom from having any ties with these feral adult children, but I say we might as well take whatever we can get as long as they leave us alone in peace. I will take that as a win!
Let the Diabalas to simmer in ther "uppity" moods too,  I know all about that, I think thats SD31's permanent mood. always uppity or offended about something, especially when shown that our lives and other's arent all about managing her emotional immaturity..isnt so nice when you dont make that your problem anymore?

Thanks everyone! My spirit is uplifted by your kind words and similar stories.

I would prefer complete freedom from ties to SD's but I realize that it's a package deal to at least some extent. The question is whither it is an extent that I can live with or not? At times it tips a little further towards "I can't do this anymore" than I would like. It takes a lot of work to take the high road and educate everyone on how I will allow them (or not allow them) to treat me.

It seems worth the pain when they are NOT here and a lot less worth it when they are here. Even when DH is handling things relatively well, I don't enjoy them.
