SS13 came for Labor Day weekend. It was probably one of the least stressful weekends we have ever had with him. While he visited, we hosted a garage sale, worked on finishing the basement, and I went to bed early each night. SS just floated around to whatever we were doing and I remained pretty disengaged, not worrying if he was having fun or complaining to BM/GF. SS' attitude seemed pretty happy and he seemed to be enjoying himself. DH reiterated the room plans - moving new baby DD (due in December) into SS' room and moving SS to the finished basement. DH explained that there may be a transitional period over Christmas break that leads to a temporary bed or an air mattress as we get things finished up. SS said he was fine with all of it, as he often gets bumped from his room to an air mattress when BM and GF's family members visit. DH reiterated to SS that it is important to us that he has a permanent bed and isn't shuffled to a couch or an air mattress, no matter how infrequently he visits - he is a member of the family, not a guest/visitor.
SS left yesterday. DH said SS went from happy and joking around with DH to immediately flat and silent when he saw BM and GF's vehicle approach. DH reminded SS that Christmas wasn't too far away. I am feeling so much better knowing that now I can start working on DD's nursery and start preparing for her arrival.
I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend!

SS's mood change when seeing BM and GF's vehicle doesn't just speak volumes - it screams volumes.
Glad you had a good weekend!

Glad you had a good visit. I think he senses he's more able to be free and be himself and be comfortable when he's at your house.
My kids father has a way of trying to control our kids, who are now 17 and 18. He tries to monitor what they do and where they go.. Always tries to be in control of them and I feel that it is overall very stifling to them. I feel that they are more comfortable at our house when they come visit because we allow them some more freedom and choice making.
When they were younger I think at least it made a bit more sense to follow along with what the parents wanted in some situations. But as they got older my ex still tried to be in control of all aspects of their life. Now as they are getting older I think they are finally starting to realize that they should have some more freedoms. I think they are starting to realize that their dad is acting controlling and in some ways manipulative with regard to how they are treated.
I've been trying to tell them that THEY have control and a say in things now that they are older. It still takes a while for them to realize.
I recognize though that in your situation all of this is much harder because of the fact that you live much farther and see SS infrequently. It makes that control issue much, much harder and near impossible. I've always been amazed at the grace of which you've handled your step son, though. In many ways that must feel comforting to him. Because, for me, I've always felt that the kids would feel good knowing that they have someone in their corner looking out for them, in a situation where here is so little freedom or control with the other parent. I think he knows this about you and your husband, because you've been the constant, reassurance for him.

I think that in many ways all of this need for control stems from insecurity by the other parent... I've seen it so much with my ex husband. It's like it angers him if I have fun with the kids or do something silly and inexpensive.. He then goes around to try to outdo whatever I did. In some ways they are afraid of losing the child, feeling insecure. It just gets very tiring to know they are not considering the needs and feelings of the child and instead are doing what makes THEM feel better... Or trying to "stick it to the other parent". It sad, isn't it.

Back in the day, when SS was young, it would take until Saturday morning for his to relax and enjoy being with Dad. His mom was a very good mom but he knew how much they disliked each other and he'd stress over it.
It sounds like your SS feels freer at Dad's, not that he isn't loved at BMs, just that BM may be overloading him w/ pressure. .

" SS just floated around to whatever we were doing "
A normal family weekend. SS may have felt he was away at a relaxing resort. No football game. No football practice. No pressure to exercise to be in shape for football.
So glad the weekend went well.

I have this feeling that when your SS turns 18, BM is going to lose her grip on him. And that's putting it mildly. She will, of course, blame your DH for showing SS what a real family looks like, one where you're not put on show all the time, where you're not there to prove a point, where promises are kept, where you can just BE, where results aren't the be all and end all, etc.
He's going to be hungry for independence. She is going to hate that.

You know what I love most about your post? You took care of YOU! I know this was a hard move for you...to go from "so caring" to "disengaged" but you are doing great. Glad things went well but really....I think your SS is starting to process his life (the little he has at that young age) and maybe, just maybe, starting to see what his bio mom and the GF are doing to him. Regardless, stay strong on your boundaries....little blips of insight do not always make full change, and at his age, he is limited. But that does not mean you have to sacrifice yourself and your children for his needs. Keep doing what you have set in place. Sending you a big Cajun hug.

@StandingStrong - Yes, I have been working hard to take care of me and put the needs/chaos/demands of SS, BM, and DH out of my brain. It has been quite refreshing to free up that brain space each day. It's still not perfect but much improved.
