DH, DDs (4 and 10 months), and I left yesterday for a two week vacation. What comes through literally as we land at our destination? An email from BM wanting to discuss Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. I swear, BM can sense when we are having fun and ruin it. Essentially, SS has 3 sport competitions over Thanksgiving break and one the day before New Years Eve in December and she is seeking flexibility so SS isn't penalized for missing. The coach is hardcore and if you miss a competition, he makes you sit out that many additional competitions to "make up" for it.
I am ticked. Not because I give two sh!ts about seeing SS ever again, but because I am sick of BM demanding flexibility to accommodate endless sports, which always inconveniences our family during the summer and holidays. I had half a brain to tell DH to respond that we are done fighting for SS and he is released from his visitation obligations. I also had half a brain to tell DH to respond "No" and that these are the real life consequences of BM moving 4 hours away. But let's be honest, SS' relationship with us is superficial at best and it's easier when he's not around.
DH reviewed the calendar and gave BM 3 options that I can live with: (1) They meet halfway the day before Thanksgiving, following the competition and DH maintains 4 days (instead of one week), getting makeup time elsewhere in the year but SS will still miss 2 out of 4 competitions, (2) DH has SS for 5 days (instead of one week), getting makeup time elsewhere in the year, but SS will still miss 2 out of 4 competitions, or (3) SS doesn't come for Thanksgiving break at all, allowing SS to attend 3 out of 4 competitions and BM owes DH 7 days of makeup time (I prefer this option). For all 3 options, DH will not budge on the Christmas break visitation so SS will miss that competition regardless.
I am just so over it. I am so over the fact that our holiday and summer plans always revolve around SS' sport commitments. I am sick of DH receiving emails for every single visitation, requesting flexibility and changes, especially when none of this actually matters to BM. According to SS, BM and GF are still looking to relocate 3 hours away, so if they move, all of this was for what? If they're looking to relocate, do his sport commitments even matter? So easy to give up sports because they don't matter on BM's time, yet are critical on DH's time. I am also sick of step life and the fact that I have to deal with nonsense like this when we just started a long-deserved vacation, where I wouldn't if I wasn't with DH or if DH didn't have a baby with BM.
And the worst part is, now I'm anxious and perseverating on this because I'm thinking "Great, how bad will this screw up/inconvenience mine and my family's life?" But knowing BM, it will take her days to respond and I will spend the next several days worrying about that response, waiting for sh!t to hit the fan.
Oh and BM emailed DH last week to inform him that she joined a branch of the military as reserves and will be leaving for a month for basic training from mid-October to mid-November. BM will be unreachable and GF will have SS while she is gone. Don't know how that's going to work with them having a 5 month old baby and SS being a wreck with his behavioral issues. GF can have fun with that, but again, typical of BM to do what BM wants, to hell with the consequences of her choices. And SS will be missing 3 days of school and sports to travel to see BM graduate from basic training (so again, I guess none of this is truly important).
Please talk me off the ledge so I can actually enjoy my vacation and not perseverate on this chaos, because I know my anxiety will not let me relax until this is resolved.

The thing for most of us is that our bm's and skids seem to aim for power and control. If your bm knew that you were going away on holiday and then contacted regarding visitation, what would her reaction be to being TOLD that absolutely no disruption to your private time must occur, except in emergencies? (And obviously, planned phone calls with ss) Going further, how would being candid go down with her? No travelling distances/time disruption for sporting events, you could consider visitation around these events, which may reduce your visitation and also organise your planning around these times that more suit a blended family. It could put the balance of control in your favour, in your home and on your time. It's a powerful message to ss and bm. ❤️

I understand your anxiety and how annoying it is to have every moment turned upside down by BMs shenanigans. I am not in your shoes, but is there any way you can just..bow out of the complex plan making?
Can your DH handle it on his own, is there any way you could just leave them to figure it out and let the chips fall where they may? If BM fails to respond in time, could DH just say other plans are now in place?
I recently was almost pulled into more chores and commitments by my partners BM, and I just stated that they could do what they wanted but I could not commit the time or effort and it slowed everyone’s roll for a minute.

DH did handle it on his own. I was not a part of that process outside of telling DH what my scheduling boundaries were as far as our holiday plans. I am at a point in step life where I am just frustrated by step life. I am frustrated by having to fit SS' needs (really BM's needs disguised as SS') into my life and my family's life. I hate the frequent communication, the control disguised as "co-parenting," all of it. SS wants little to do with us, but BM won't let it be "done" because she still wants control and access to DH. I sometimes just wish they would all leave us alone and they live their life and we live ours.

Here’s a mind game I play with myself when mental and emotional chaos invades from Skidville.
Refocus on disengagement. RADICAL disengagement. Consciously banish thoughts and feelings that intrude into your happiness—come up with your own magic words or rituals to get your brain off the crazy train. Smother that cute baby in kisses. Do 10 jumping jacks. Name all the colors in the room you’re in. Whatever distracts you from BM’s nonsense for a moment. Then go on, consciously not allowing BM to take your joy.
It’s not easy. And I still resent that I have to deal with it at all. Yesterday I had to do some of that after a phone call DH had with SS. All the old trauma rushes back and I have to push it away. A sudden need to wash my hair helped me wash away the SS b.s.
It never goes away completely but over time I’ve been able to shorten the duration and intensity of those intrusions.

The trauma is the worst part. When I know there is an ask, I immediately go into fight or flight - perseverating, sweaty palms, etc. wondering what fresh hell she will cause that will rock our lives. I hate that she has the ability to do that to me. I hate that I feel powerless against her. I do the mental redirection, the talking it out, the positive mantras, etc. but it always lives in the back of my head until it's resolved.

UPDATE: DH talked to SS tonight for his weekly Facetime call. DH asked SS point blank if he wanted to visit for Thanksgiving or just skip it. SS insisted he wanted to visit. DH told SS that he emailed BM back, and let him know that there are limited options to allow him to participate and still visit. SS said the only "major" thing is Wednesday before Thanksgiving but also that the coach said it could be made up if "absolutely necessary." SS made it sound somewhat important but not critical like BM did.
So at this point, either BM is manipulating, SS is downplaying, or both, but I'm over it. Now DH is on cloud 9 again, because he is excited that SS still wants to visit (cue eyeroll). I guess we will see which option BM chooses and how much it disrupts everything.
