I used to post on Step Talk, very glad to see the forum is continuing in new form here.
I'm SM to 3 SKs in their 30s, all of whom were used extensively as pawns by BM in her besiegement of me and DH when we got together after their marriage had ended. DH and I then had two children, now young adults too.
There were difficulties with the SKs and DH/me which were awful at the time but did get ironed out and I would say I'm actually close to two of the SKs, though everyone is super careful. The third of them is now engaged to be married.
The fiancée's parents have now invited both families to the engagement celebration party that they are throwing for their child. We can't believe they don't know the history, which is that BM is a narc and makes very public scenes at every opportunity, particularly in the presence of her children. She is also dead set against me attending any family event. To the point that the SKs as they grew older, were forced to retract their invitations to me to attend milestone events of their own because BM had ordered them to. As a result, DH had decided he could not go either.
If BM does this here once again, then the same will happen and I will have no issue. But if she does not, quite simply because she cannot control these other parents like she can her children, there is a high risk she will just wait for now and then do something manipulative or confrontational at the gig.
My question is, in this situation would you just not go at all, or would you go and just try to manage any crisis that arose? Normally I would simply not go at all just to avoid the grief, and leave DH to it, but DH naively told our own two kids that they were invited to this gig and I most certainly would not be leaving them to face any music alone.
Anyone had a similar experience? Or any ideas?

In your place I think I would go ahead and attend the event - if BM makes a scene, it's on her, and the fiancee's parents will see exactly what sort of person she is. I'm sure you, DH and your kids will behave impeccably which will show her up even more.

I've had to attend multiple events with BioHo. There hasn't been a single event where she didn’t come off looking like trash. She was basically booted from SS27's wedding.
Go. This is about the happy couple, not a vindictive nut job.
Take time to find the appropriate outfit that makes you feel confident.
Be proud to be on your DH's arm.
Be your normal gracious, charming, and lovely self.
If/when BM makes a scene, do not stoop to her level. Stay on the high road.
As Kes said, the fiancée's parents will see what she is.

I agree, go, look great, act well. I had to go to numerous events where BM was present and you will, too. Showers, weddings, grandchildren birthday parties, recitals, etc. The ironic part is that now that our BM is dead, the grandkids want me to perform the role for the great- grandkids, remember bdays, host their visits, bake Christmas cookies. BM might be rolling in her grave. I guess the gkids think any port in the storm. Lol.

Thank you all, that's extremely helpful.

Oh, yes. I agree with everyone. Go! If BM acts up, smile (perhaps with an eyeroll), hold your head high, and let her make a fool of herself.

In agreement with everyone else....defintiely GO! Get a new outfit, get your hair and makeup done and SHINE bright! If the BM cuts up, that is on her....as Morning Mia said...give an eye roll and walk away from the drama.

I’m with everyone else- definitely go, this is an ideal situation where you won’t even need to do anything for the BM to reveal herself to this new set of people.
I’d also add that you might want to think of an outfit and style that is extra classy to highlight the chasm between your and BM’s presentation. Maybe conjure up an image of a golden era Hollywood actress (Marlene Dietrich, Audrey Hepburn etc.) and channel their energy, especially when BM starts acting unhinged.

I knew I'd see BM at SD's wedding (since I did all the planning and we paid for it all). My prime job, though, was to make sure I looked my best so I went straight to Saks where I didn't usually shop. This was during the time when Dallas was on tv. The saleslady kept showing me Miss Ellie dresses but I bought a Pam. Lol. Worth every penny.
