What a great article. Thank you for sharing it.
Not anywhere near the spectrum, that we know of anyway, but DW and I raised an ADHD kid. Though we did not know it. My dad saw it. We didn't. We did take his concerns to our pediatrician who was profoundly dismissive of dad's observations and categorically "ruled out" that SS had any syndrome of the moment. Meanwhile back at the ranch and 20+ years later, SS received an adult DX of ADHD. With anxiety and PTSD added over the couple of years following the ADHD Dx.
Our default logic-based parenting structure was ... structure and accountability. SS has always been smarter than just about anyone in proximity to him. For sure that was the case all through school and even into his adult life. He is very empathetic but also very aware that few are capable of what he is capable of intellectually. Our highly structured and behavioral standards-based parenting model in all likelihood helped our son succeed where he may not have with a less structured low parental involvement environment model. Spending 2 of his HS years in a Military School probably locked in an understanding that to function he needed a structured environment. Particularly when he lost that opportunity due to poor choices on his part and was faced with looming adulthood where he and he alone would have to figure it out. Not that he would ever have had to actually figure it all out without our support and guidance. That will never happen as long as we are on the green side of the grass, and he keeps his head in the realm of reasonable behavior towards himself and his mom and me. We are blessed that he is capable of reasonable behavior. Unlike the SD in the article.
I have learned a lot from his mind and his empathy. Some of it drives me nucking futz, but his character and intellect are incredible.
The SM in the article is a blessing in the lives of her SD, her DH, and their blended family members. The young woman is fortunate to have this SM in her life.
